Watchlists are meant to be temporary holding pens. In practice they become museums of half-finished theses.

Ask the origin question

For each equity: what was the original reason it earned a slot? If you cannot answer in one sentence without checking old emails, the monitoring cost is already too high.

Look for factor twins

Three “independent” industrial names that all rise and fall with the same export cycle are not three ideas. They are one idea wearing different tickers. A light crowding note during a watchlist assessment often frees more attention than removing an obviously weak single name.

Prefer monitoring triggers over vague hope

“Wait for a better entry” without a trigger is not a plan. Link continued presence on the list to events: a margin print, a debt refinance, a contract renewal. If the trigger passes and nothing changes, the name should leave.

Schedule the prune

Hygiene fails when it is only done in anger after a drawdown. A quarterly half-hour with a printed list beats an annual crisis clear-out.
